The 5 Levels Of Hoarding:

​

• LEVEL 1 hoarder homes have simple clutter that hardly affects the day-to-day operations of the home. Houses around the world often experience minor levels of clutter either on a constant basis or on occasion. 

​

• LEVEL 2 hoarding is recognized by an inability to access horizontal surfaces like countertops, tables, window ledges, etc.. At this stage, the home is still accessible and functional. 

​

• LEVEL 3 hoarding is determined by piles of clutter in the perimeters of the rooms. Certain areas become non-functional due to these piles. Closets and cupboards are jam-packed and overflowing. Many areas of the home are considered threatened as accessibility and usability becomes limited. 

 

• LEVEL 4 hoarding is identified as clutter that fills all functional space. Mobility throughout the home is threatened and certain rooms cannot be accessed. Rodents and insects might have infiltrated the home and utilities and appliances (like gas, electricity, plumbing, stoves, and refrigerators) can be non-functional.  Level 4 is considered a moderate to severe situation.

• LEVEL 5 hoarding is identified when the entire home is compromised. There might be narrow pathways through the house or no pathways at all. Rooms have little to no accessibility as they are filled from floor to ceiling and often overflowing. Movement into and out of the property is greatly hindered or next to impossible. Hazardous materials threaten the well-being of all those in proximity; rodent and pest infestations are likely and biohazards like human and animal waste are prominent. Gross filth is prevalent and both cosmetic and structural damage threatens the health of the home and its occupant.  Level 5 is the most severe and dangerous kind of hoarding.
